|
Formed in 1872 the Alpini ( "the
Alpines" ) are an elite force within
the Italian Army specialised in
mountain warfare.
In World War I they fought against
Austro-Hungarian soldiers in a
particularly bloody war - The Battle
of Mount Grappa. This battle was
fought in the last two months of 1917.
Veneto secured its borders.
Mount Grappa (Italian Monte
Grappa) is a 1,775 metres tall
mountain in the Veneto region of
Italy. Part of the Alpine foothills, the
mountain traverses the provinces of
Vicenza, Treviso and Belluno.
The bridge in the centre of Bassano
de Grappa, crossing the Brenta river,
is known as the Ponte degli Alpini
and is a famous tourist attraction.
